Interviewing at Shopify Plus

The Hiring Process

At Shopify Plus, we strive to find and hire the best talent. We want every candidate to feel comfortable throughout our interview process, and you'll find our interviews are more like conversations than interrogations. We want you to feel like you can be 100% yourself throughout our interview process (and every day at work after that).

You'll have a mix of different types of interviews and have a chance to meet different people across Shopify Plus. You'll have the opportunity to discuss and demonstrate the impact you've had in previous roles, and how you'd like to learn and grow in your next role.

We take hiring very seriously, and want to ensure that both the role and Shopify Plus are a good fit for you. If at the end of the interview process we find there's a great fit, you'll hit the ground running from day one (no probationary period here). If you have any questions about what to expect from our hiring process, feel free to reach out to one of our recruiters.

Initial Call

If your application passes our initial review, we'll schedule a phone call to gain valuable insight into your background and interests as well as address all of your questions about the role, sales organization, product, and company culture. At this stage, we'd love to hear about what you're currently working on, the projects that excite you, why you're looking to join Shopify Plus, and why sales is the right fit for you.

Life Story

Everyone interviewing at Shopify Plus will do what's called a Life Story. As the name suggests, we're looking to find out a little bit about how you've ended up where you are today. How did your passion for sales start? What's the most amazing place you've travelled to? We want to get to know a little bit about you - the real you!

This interview will help us get to know you on a more personal level, and we hope that you get to know a bit more about us too. For this interview, you'll be sitting down with a member of our Talent Acquisition team - our recruiters are genuinely curious about you and your interests, and the aim is to have a comfortable and candid conversation. Since this interview is about your experiences, you don't have to come prepared with anything.

Discovery Call

We like to do things a little differently at Shopify Plus and the discovery call is a perfect example of that. At this stage, we'll be evaluating your resourcefulness, curiosity, communication skills, and composure over a short call with one of our sales managers. The purpose of this call is for you to uncover as much information as possible about the next step in the interview process - the sales pitch. The more information you gather, the better. For example, you may want to take this opportunity to ask about our product, sales methodologies, target markets, or even how to handle objections.

If you pass this stage, we'll coordinate in-person interviews where you'll prepare a short sales pitch on why a merchant should join Shopify Plus. Please remember to be yourself, be open to feedback, and, most of all, have fun with it!

Meeting the Team

Congratulations! You've made it to the last step in the recruitment process. Your visit to the Ottawa or Waterloo office will be split into two sections - a conversation with the sales team and a sales pitch.

The first meeting will be a conversation with a few folks from our Sales and Sales Enablement teams. Once again, it will be very casual in nature but the conversations will dive deeper into your education, work experience, and extracurricular activities. In addition, we’ll focus on why you want to be in sales and why you chose Shopify Plus in particular. For this interview, we'll be evaluating your history of success, entrepreneurial spirit, competitiveness, and communication skills. Feel free to check this blog post from our GM, Loren Padelford, that highlights some of the traits we look for in stellar salespeople.

The second meeting will be a sales pitch with 1 or 2 sales managers. In short, we'd like you to prepare a presentation (10 minutes and 5 slides max) on why a merchant should join our platform. For this interview, we'll be evaluating your preparation, creativity, communication skills, and coachability.

Before You Head In

For more information about individual office locations, check out our 'Visiting The Office' tab.

When you come in for interviews at the office, don't stress about what to wear - our attire is casual. Dress in anything you're comfortable in (just as long as you don't show up in your birthday suit).

During this interview process, you will have the opportunity to get in touch with our Accessibility team to let them know if you have any questions or concerns. They're happy to help with anything from identifying the location of gender neutral washrooms, to potential preferences of elevators vs. stairs, and any other accommodations that you may need during your visit.

Lastly, if you are scheduled to have lunch during a day of meetings, it will be provided at the office. We offer vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options daily in Ottawa. If you are travelling to Montreal, Toronto, San Francisco, or Waterloo and have any special dietary needs, please let your recruiter or coordinator know in advance.
